Why Yale Art of School?

At the Yale School of Art, you will receive a liberal arts education that will enable you to succeed in your area of study. The art school provides hands-on instructions, a wide range of courses, and the faculty is made out of accomplished artists whose goal is to foster creativity that reflects the uniqueness and talent of each student in the program.

Graduate Admission Requirements

The Yale School of Art requires prospective students to have a high level of capability and commitment. To enroll, applicants must have previously earned a bachelor's degree or diploma from an accredited professional art school.  Exceptions may apply due to education differences, prior preparation, and accomplishments at the discretion of the admissions committee. The overall admission process is selective and competitive.

Applying to the Yale School of Art

Applications are only accepted in September. The admission committee informs students in early February of their preliminary selections and the final decision is made in early March. To apply for more than one degree, students must submit separate paperwork and pay a fee.

Admission Materials for Preliminary Selection

The following five application materials must be submitted by every applicant.

1. Online Application

​

Fill out the online application and pay the nonrefundable fee of $100. 


2. Statement

​

Write a one-page statement that includes influences, interests, current work, personal story, and explain why you want to enroll in the program. In addition, statements must be 500-words and make references to the work displayed in your portfolio.

​

3. References

​

Submit references from three people with experience in your choice of study and who can attest to your ability to succeed in the program.

​

4. Transcripts

​

Student copies or unofficial transcripts are accepted in the preliminary selection.

Neither junior college transcripts nor Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required.


5. Portfolio

​

Submit the best work that reflects your ability and your current art direction. Half of the submitted work must have been created in the past twelve months and the rest within the last three years.
